Where did copyright come from?

In this blog I would like to focus on highlights of the history of the idea of copyright. This is not a smooth clear cut history, but a history that has evolved and been influenced by religious and political powers and the invention of technology. Copyright is not simple. It was created as a complex system of laws and traditions with the interests of three groups of people in mind-authors, publishers, and the public.
